iDEAL becomes Wero

03-12-2025 - Travellers who pay their travel sum via STO Garant usually use iDEAL, the most common online payment method in the Netherlands. From 2026 onwards, this will gradually change: iDEAL will become Wero. Below you can read what this means.

What is Wero?

After the renewal of iDEAL in 2024, it was decided to transition iDEAL into Wero, a European digital wallet already used by millions of Europeans. Wero is part of a joint European initiative to make online payments simpler and future-proof.

Why is iDEAL changing?

The goal is to create one uniform payment solution across Europe. While iDEAL is mainly used in the Netherlands, Wero will make it possible to pay safely and easily in several European countries.

What does this mean for travellers?

For travellers, very little will change. Wero works almost the same as iDEAL:

• you select your bank;
• log in as usual;
• and approve the payment.

Payments will continue to be processed securely via STO Garant’s third-party funds account, just as they are now.

How will the transition work?

Together with ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank, a phased transition will take place. From early 2026, the new iDEAL | Wero logo will appear on STO Garant’s payment page instead of the current iDEAL logo. Behind the scenes, payments will gradually be transferred to the Wero platform. Eventually, only the name Wero will remain visible.

Do I need to do anything?

No, travellers do not need to take any action. Payments via iDEAL will continue to work until Wero has been fully implemented.

The transition from iDEAL to Wero is a positive step forward: familiar, secure and ready for the future.
